Mocking birds move in the back yard

Mockingbird patrolThis summer, we had the pleasure to observe a family of mocking birds build a nest, and care for their young. The bird activity took place in our garden by the rose bush trellis.  The two mockingbirds created all kinds of commotion during the construction phase of their nest, and before we knew it, the new residents were done and had expanded their family by adding three baby mocking birds. We were in awe and decided to observe and document nature at its finest. Over a three week period, Wander in Nature did an excellent job filming this amazing experience and risked getting attacked by the overprotective mockingbird mom who was going back and forth to carry food for her young. The nest is now empty and up for rent calling on new tenants, and we will be watching.

Bahama mockingbird takes flight by Wander in Nature

Bahama Mockingbird 1.1Sometime in the transition between Spring and Summer, I stumbled across a bird’s nest wedged in the top corner of the rose garden.  After a much needed boost, I peered in and discovered the bobbing beaks of three little nestlings, so fragile and still without their feathers.

Over the next few days, I hoped to follow their growth and capture them during feeding time with their two parents that had clearly made their presence known.  One of the young birds appeared to take over the nest for a while, and eventually took flight into the big wide world.
